Today the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a decree and an explanatory note, signed by His Eminence, Cardinal Tucho Fernández, which declares that the SSPX Bishops and priests are excommunicated latae sententiae, and are thus in schism. As for the faithful who attend the SSPX Masses, these faithful can also be in schism and excommunicated if they “adhere to the schism.”
Nevertheless the explanatory note cites a document from 1996 “still in force,” which clarifies that one can attend the SSPX Masses without adhereing to the schism, a situation which must be “assessed on a case-by-case basis, in the competent bodies of the external and internal forums.”

Dichiaro dunque a tutti gli effetti giuridici che sia il suddetto Vescovo Alfonso de Galarreta sia Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry e Marc Hanappier sono incorsi ipso facto nella scomunica latae sententiae riservata alla Sede Apostolica. | Nota Esplicativa del Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede, 02.07.2026 NOTA ESPLICATIVA Dai tempi di San Paolo VI fino agli ultimi colloqui, svoltisi recentemente presso questo Dicastero, i molteplici tentativi di ricondurre gli aderenti al movimento iniziato da Mons. Marcel Lefebvre alla piena comunione con la Chiesa cattolica si sono rivelati vani. Tale situazione si è ulteriormente aggravata a causa delle recenti consacrazioni episcopali celebrate senza mandato pontificio, contro la volontà del Santo Padre, in aperta violazione del diritto canonico. Pertanto, questo Dicastero, nel fedele esercizio delle funzioni ad esso affidate, ritiene necessario rilevare che tale atto ha configurato il delitto di scisma, con le conseguenze canoniche per i ministri sacri e per i fedeli laici coinvolti. Infatti, come già dichiarato nel 1988, “tale disobbedienza – che porta con sé un rifiuto pratico del Primato romano – costituisce un atto scismatico” (cfr. Giovanni Paolo II, Lett. ap. Ecclesia Dei, 3). A tale riguardo, d’ora in poi: I ministri sacri appartenenti alla Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X, sono nello scisma e devono pertanto essere considerati scismatici (cfr. Ecclesia Dei, 5 c; Pontificio Consiglio per i Testi Legislativi, Nota esplicativa sulla scomunica per scisma in cui incorrono gli aderenti al movimento del Vescovo Marcel Lefebvre, 24.08.1996, 5-6), risultando soggetti alla scomunica prevista dal diritto (can. 1364 § 1 CJC). Per quanto concerne i fedeli laici, sono da ritenersi scismatici e scomunicati coloro che aderiscono formalmente alla Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X alle condizioni stabilite nella Nota esplicativa dal Pontificio Consiglio per i Testi Legislativi del 1996 (cfr. ibidem, 7), ancora vigente, che questo Dicastero fa propria. Si avverte, infine, il santo Popolo di Dio che i ministri sacri della Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X amministrano illecitamente i sacramenti e che il sacramento della penitenza da loro amministrato e il matrimonio da loro assistito sono invalidi. La Chiesa, come madre premurosa, accoglierà con sincero affetto e viva sollecitudine tutti coloro che desiderano tornare alla piena comunione. I Nunzi Apostolici disporranno delle procedure che gli Ordinari potranno utilizzare nei diversi casi. Si esortano, infine, tutti i fedeli a rimanere saldi nella comunione con il Romano Pontefice, con i Vescovi in comunione con lui e con tutta la Chiesa (cfr. Kennedy Arcivescovo tit. di Ossero Segretario per la Sezione Disciplinare | DICASTERY FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH EXPLANATORY NOTE From the time of Pope Paul VI up to the most recent conversations held at this Dicastery, the many attempts to bring the adherents of the movement initiated by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre back to full communion with the Catholic Church have proven fruitless. This situation has been further aggravated by the recent episcopal consecrations celebrated without a pontifical mandate, against the will of the Holy Father, in open violation of canon law. Accordingly, this Dicastery, in the faithful exercise of the functions entrusted to it, considers it necessary to note that this act has constituted the offense of schism, with the resulting canonical consequences for the sacred ministers and lay faithful involved. Indeed, as was already declared in 1988, “such disobedience — which carries with it a practical rejection of the Roman Primacy — constitutes a schismatic act” (cf. John Paul II, Apost. Letter Ecclesia Dei, 3). In this regard, henceforth: 1. The sacred ministers belonging to the Society of Saint Pius X are in schism and must therefore be considered schismatics (cf. Ecclesia Dei, 5c; Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, Explanatory Note on the excommunication for schism incurred by adherents of the movement of Bishop Marcel Lefebvre, 24.08.1996, 5–6), and are subject to the excommunication provided for by law (can. 1364 § 1 CIC). 2. With regard to the lay faithful, those who formally adhere to the Society of Saint Pius X under the conditions established in the Explanatory Note of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts of 1996 (cf. ibid., 7) — still in force, and hereby adopted by this Dicastery — are to be considered schismatics and excommunicated. 3. The holy People of God is hereby informed that the sacred ministers of the Society of Saint Pius X administer the sacraments illicitly, and that the sacrament of penance administered by them and the marriages they assist at are invalid. The Church, as a devoted mother, will receive with sincere affection and eager care all those who desire to return to full communion. The Apostolic Nuncios will have at their disposal the procedures that Ordinaries may employ in the various cases. Finally, all the faithful are exhorted to remain firm in communion with the Roman Pontiff, with the bishops in communion with him, and with the whole Church (cf. Lumen Gentium, 22; can. 751 CIC), and to refrain from participating in the celebrations and activities promoted by the aforementioned Society of Saint Pius X.
