Dear OnePeterFive donors, supporters, and readers,
I’ve been the editor in chief at OnePeterFive for three years now… but I’ve never shared the story of how I got here.
It starts fourteen years ago. Back then, I was Eastern Orthodox.
I’d come to the Eastern Orthodox church because I was looking for a spiritual life grounded in history. I wanted to be part of the great Tradition. I wanted to know the Church founded by Jesus Christ, not Martin Luther or Joseph Smith or Joel Osteen. My heart had been restless for years as a Protestant, and it seemed to finally find peace as an Orthodox Christian.
Fourteen years ago, I was firmly convinced that the Eastern Orthodox Church was founded by Jesus Christ, and the Roman Catholic Church was in schism from the Mystical Body of Christ.
But then I experienced the real crisis of authority in Eastern Orthodoxy, and began to realize, painfully, that I had not understood Roman Catholicism. The restlessness in my heart returned.
After several more years of searching, my heart finally found the fullness of Tradition: the Tradition of “Ancient Rome” and the divinely revealed dogma of the Papacy.
So shortly after Pope Francis was elected in 2013, I came into communion with Rome and became a Roman Catholic.
Years passed as I tried my best to work out my salvation as a Catholic. I grew up a little. Got married and had children. Through these years, my heart rested in peace. I was so grateful to leave the mess that is Eastern Orthodoxy and seek salvation as a Roman Catholic – as a member of the true Church, the Ark of Salvation.
Then suddenly, the “summer of shame” happened in 2018 – McCarrick was unmasked. The second great sex scandal cast its dark shadow over the hearts of the faithful worldwide.
And all around me, Catholics began to question their faith in the Roman dogmas – the dogmas about the Papacy that I had sacrificed Eastern Orthodoxy to obtain; those dogmas that had finally brought my heart to peace after so many years. This grieved me deeply.
Then I found OnePeterFive.
Here I discovered a community of Christians fighting to maintain that Tradition where peace is found. Here Catholics were speaking the truth in charity and fighting to pass down the faith in the midst of a crisis.
This is why I am Catholic. And ultimately, this is why I decided to give my life to this work at OnePeterFive — and why I hope you will join me.
