Dear OnePeterFive Confraternity members,

VIVA CRISTO REY!

Happy feast of our Emperor in Heaven! 🙂

We are pleased to announce the next addition to our editorial board for OnePeterFive: His Excellency, Archduke Eduard Habsburg. He is of course a member of the honoured family of lay nobility, the Habsburgs, out of which came the great Blessed Emperor Karl, upon whom we depend as one of our patrons at OnePeterFive.

Eduard Habsburg served as Hungary’s ambassador to the Holy See (2015-2025) and the Sovereign Order of Malta. His family reigned in Austria, Hungary, Germany, and Spain (and quite a few other places). Also known as Archduke Eduard of Austria, he is a diplomat and social media personality. Eduard and his wife, Baroness Maria Theresia von Gudenus, have six children. Eduard is the author of several books, including The Habsburg Way: Seven Rules for Turbulent Times, Building a Wholesome Family in a Broken World: Habsburg Lessons from the Centuries, and the children’s book Dubbie: The Double-Headed Eagle; volumes on Thomas Aquinas and James Bond; novels; and screenplays.

He brings to OnePeterFive a living connection to the long tradition of lay nobility which has built Christendom since the time of the Apostles. As such, we are honoured to have His Excellency with us and to promote his great work.

He regularly speaks about Catholic lay nobility and family on his new Substack The Habsburg Way:

His most recent text is Discovering the Latin Mass: A Travel Guide for the Curious.

The Habsburg Family and the History of Christendom

One of the curious things about the crumbling Anglo-American Empire is that the devotion to Blessed Emperor Karl is very widespread in these United States. On the one hand, this reflects a huge discontent in these United States for the sorry and corrupt state of modern politics. But more on the positive side, it reflects the resonance of Catholic tradition of English liberties (Spanish: fueros, aka “subsidiarity”) that still obtains in this crumbling Anglo-American Empire, despite generations of the poison of Liberalism.

Like our sister publication, Crisis Magazine, OnePeterFive is an English language online journal. But unlike Crisis Magazine, our scope is global: rebuilding Christendom in every soul and society, just as the ancient Roman rite built and rebuilt Christendom before and after Trent, in Europe, the Americas and even east Asia.

As history shows, the Habsburg family has been at the heart of this building and rebuilding, constructing the great monuments of our forefathers worldwide to the greater glory of our Eucharistic King in His ancient Roman rite. A critical piece of this is shown in the palace of Spanish Habsburg Philip II: the monastery was at the centre of the palace (Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial). Thus the ancient Roman rite was at the heart of building and rebuilding – Sacramental grace worthily received is the efficacious builder of the Kingdom of God in all places.

The Spanish Habsburg Royal Monastery

For Blessed Emperor Karl, the Eucharistic King of King, enthroned in the ancient Roman rite, was the heart and soul of his whole being, and that of his empress Zita. In his recent talk on Blessed Emperor Karl, Archduke Eduard shared how the holy Emperor and Empress took all their strength for all the crosses of their lives from Christ in the Latin Mass every day. Their greatest cross – amidst so many wars and sufferings – was the time of their journey into exile – not because of the journey per se, but because they were unable to attend daily Mass. Thus we see at the heart of our emperor in heaven was the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.

This is how a man rules his kingdom for the King of Kings.

This is why I am so excited to welcome His Excellency as a member of our editorial staff. Do yourself and your family a favour and buy his books and read them. I speak especially to all the fathers of families out there: learn from this lay nobleman how all our forefathers lived and died, loyal to the Roman faith, the Roman Pontiff and the Roman rite, and allowing divine grace to build Christendom in souls and societies.

VIVA CRISTO REY!
