This Saturday, October 5, there will be a major pilgrimage in the Washington, D.C. area in support of the Traditional Latin Mass.
In July 2022, devastating restrictions on the TLM were imposed by the Vatican in the Diocese of Arlington and Archdiocese of Washington.
Formerly, nearly thirty parishes in the metro D.C. area had regular TLMs. Attendance was growing rapidly, with many converts and young families. Under the restrictions, that number was reduced to eleven. In most cases, the locations were moved away from parish churches to makeshift locations such as converted school gyms and social halls.
In the aftermath of the restrictions, the Latin Mass community organized a yearly pilgrimage between the main cathedral in Washington, D.C. This pilgrimage—the National Latin Mass Pilgrimage—is now on its fourth iteration. It occurs this Saturday, October 5, and you can sign up and learn more details here.
The pilgrimage processes between the main cathedral of the Diocese of Arlington (St. Thomas More in Arlington, VA) and the main cathedral of the Archdiocese of Washington (St. Matthew in Washington, D.C.). It passes by Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House as we pray for an end to all Latin Mass restrictions.
If you cannot make it to D.C., you can follow along on the OnePeterFive X account, which will be live-tweeting the pilgrimage.
As devastating as the restrictions were, the Latin Mass has only persisted and grown stronger. The local community has established the Arlington Latin Mass Society to disseminate Latin Mass times and promote the Latin Mass at a time when the local dioceses cannot advertise the Latin Mass in any way. This will provide an infrastructure to support the growth of the TLM for years to come. We also hold a weekly Rosary Rally outside the Apostolic Nunciature to pray for an end to restrictions. We know that with God’s help, the traditional Latin Mass will continue to grow and bring souls to Christ and his Church, as it has done for centuries.
