The Rape of Europe

Cologne Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and the tallest Catholic church structure in Europe. If you’ve ever seen a Gothic cathedral, you know how impressive they can be. Notre Dame de Paris has nothing on Cologne. It took over six centuries to complete, and is Germany’s most visited landmark. It’s even taller than Reims, the cathedral where the kings of France were crowned for a thousand years.

Last week, in the literal shadow of this monument to European Christianity, 1,000 Arab and North African men assaulted around 100 women. You can read accounts of this horrific event, which included at least one rape. You can’t read too many descriptions, though; only the ones which have been approved by the press. German Facebook has censored descriptions from other victims of the attacks, citing a “xenophobic tendency” in the accounts. Reports say that similar attacks took place in Hamburg and Stuttgart, though details have been hard to come by. The responses by officials in Cologne have varied between absurd and outrageous: headlines like “German Police Search for 1,000 Men After Mass Sexual Assault” don’t exactly inspire confidence. The female mayor of Cologne has even suggested that the women of Cologne—the women, mind you, not the migrants—follow a new “code of conduct” to avoid being raped. (Of course, dressing modestly is always a good idea. But Christian modesty is meant to beautify; and I would humbly submit that there’s nothing beautiful about a niqab.)

I was a few hundred miles away on New Year’s Eve, in another European capital that was also under a terrorism threat for the holiday. That is precisely what the attacks on European women were, of course: terrorism, and profoundly symbolic terrorism, at that. This was not my first trip to Europe, and as I traveled through a few different countries, the changed nature of the pan-European world was palpable. The fabric of society was stretched just too thin, the state of nature rippling just beneath the surface. One act, any moment, and the seams could burst apart. The people I spoke to expressed either feelings of helplessness or nihilism about what was happening to their homeland—or both.

There’s something jarring about being awakened by shouts of “Allahu Akbar” outside your hotel. In the former Holy Roman Empire. On the eve of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

In the meantime, here in the United States, the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has declared this week to be “National Migration Week.” In the spirit of “welcoming the stranger,” the USCCB urges the Catholic faithful to pray for a continued commitment to refugee resettlement, as well as “advocacy” for migrants by politicians, policy-makers, and Catholic laymen. The USCCB also helpfully provides policy recommendations for the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe, including: “Providing 100,000 annual resettlement slots for the most vulnerable refugees fleeing the Syria conflict,” and, “Designating an additional 100,000 refugees to be resettled in the U.S. from other countries.” Of course, the USCCB is one of the 9 major refugee resettlement agencies in the country: that is, they specifically benefit monetarily from refugee resettlement.

In 2014, American taxpayer dollars paid for 97% of the USCCB Migration Fund Budget, for a total of $85,506,950.

What could be wrong with this, though? Regardless of where the money comes from, isn’t it put to good use? Don’t we have a moral imperative to welcome these refugees, be they refugees of war or refugees of economic hardship? Isn’t it “racist and xenophobic” not to welcome migrants, as Pope Francis has noted?

After all, the American Bishops have recently issued an updated version of their instructional document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (FCFC), which reflects on the political obligations of Catholics and is updated the year before presidential elections. Stephen M. Krason’s analysis of the update, over at Crisis Magazine, reveals one of the most important changes:

FCFC (#34) lists “intrinsically evil acts,” and says that Catholics cannot vote for a political candidate “who favors a policy promoting” them, at least “if the voter’s intent is to support” any such positions. It mentions here abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, “deliberately subjecting workers or the poor to subhuman living conditions,” “redefining marriage in ways that violate its essential meaning,” and “racist behavior”…

While FCFC is a commendable document in many ways, it is not without shortcomings. An obvious one is that it needed to define what is meant by “racist behavior” included among the intrinsic evils. It should be apparent from even a cursory consideration of the race issue in America that “racism” has taken on an utterly expansive and ever-changing meaning that self-serving ideologues and activists constantly use to club anyone who gets in their way. Such a glaring omission makes me wonder about how carefully the bishops are following the current American socio-political scene.

On the contrary, the Bishops have used this language more than a few times before, especially in reference to those who oppose mass immigration. If someone who opposes mass immigration is a “racist,” and if voting for a “racist” is now participation in “intrinsic evil,” that is, evil of the same level as abortion and homosexual “marriage,” then the political agenda of the Bishops seems to become clearer.

But does it accord with Catholic teaching? Are we required to support mass immigration, regardless of numerical proportion?

The answer is no. Not unless the current princes of the Church are really doing away with the political teaching of Aquinas and Augustine, in favor of the universalist dreams of Kantian morality. It is likely sufficient here to refer to John Horvat II’s reflection on the relevant parts of the Summa Theologiae. In brief, he says, “It is clear that immigration must have two things in mind: the first is the nation’s unity; and the second is the common good.” Charity cannot have as its result the destabilization of the political order, as this results in the destruction of order, and therefore, the common good. (See also Augustine’s City of God, Book XIX.)

Which brings us back to Cologne, and the larger fate of Europe. At the absolute earliest, Germany will be majority non-German by 2020. In one generation, ethnic Germans will be a minority. The new majority will be Muslim. Germany may have taken in nearly 1.5 million migrants this year (it’s difficult to tell, as the latest stats show that a mere 10% of migrants in Europe have been documented in any way), but the German birthrate produces about half of that in one year. The social disintegration of Europe has begun, and will only continue in ever increasing intensity. As Samuel P. Goldman has pointed out,

The fear of social death that comes with civilizational decline is unspeakably worse than individual death, and horror before the prospect of social death gives impulse to atrocious behavior. More precisely, it makes it impossible to say what is atrocious and what is not. “We cannot, indeed, imagine our own death; whenever we try to do so we find that we survive ourselves as spectators,” said Freud. That is not quite true: we often tremble at the prospect of our own death in fear and horror, which we would not do if we did not imagine it. Our consciousness, rather, is both individual and social, and we regard our own death with the inner eye of those with whom we share a common language and aspirations, which will not end with our physical existence.

Unless it does. That is the ultimate horror. It is one thing to imagine being a spectator at your own funeral, and another to imagine yourself shut into perpetual silence, cut off from all human contact, with no past and no future. That is a living death, a mental presence without consciousness. Imagine, for example, that on your deathbed you are the last speaker of a language that will become extinct upon your passing, erasing your memory and your history. That is a horror much worse than Hell, where at least you can chat with your neighbor in the brimstone pit. At least the shade of Achilles could gripe to Odysseus about the misery of the underworld; imagine how the son of Peleus would have felt if all memory of Greece along with its language were forever extinguished, and he sat in Hades alone and in perpetual silence.

That is how it feels to be trapped in a dying civilization. Rationality ceases to have meaning. Upon learning that you have an inoperable malignant brain tumor, you might cash in your insurance policy and go on a spree—but not if everyone who speaks your language and shares your memories already is extinct. In that case there is nothing to do with your money.

In America, things are far less immediately dire. We have a larger population and a higher birthrate. But there’s no reason that what is happening in Europe cannot happen here. And it would not only be a civilizational tragedy, but an immense tragedy for the Catholic faith. Even if we are now supposed to believe that religious pluralism is a part of Catholic teaching, even if Catholics and Muslims do worship the same God, it seems foolish to assume that the new majority rulers of Europe are going to share that view.

We can pray that it all turns out all right. But are we willing to take that chance? Don’t we have a moral obligation not to take that chance?

  1. I have a rule I live by now: Anything associated however vaguely with USCCB, any mailing, any e-mail, any promotion, or request for money, etc. is immediately suspect. As far as I am concerned, USCCB is little more than a subsidiary of the US Democrat Party. I contribute nothing to this entity and I listen to its suggestions even less.

    • Let us pray for the faithful clergy – that they will stand firm in the faith so that we may follow.
      It is sad that the shepherd who took the pledge to defend the faith has lost his way. Let us stay strong and persevere.

  2. The American hierarchy, with a few notable exceptions, is unbelievably myopic (and downright stupid) about most issues these days, especially immigration. Until there is a Beslan event, in a Catholic school, they just won’t believe it. By then, it will be too late. It’s not the 19th century anymore, or the 1960’s with peace, love, hippies and tie-dye. An open door/open wallet policy to all immigrants just will not work. Our country (and others) will be bankrupt and there won’t be any Catholics left to fill the pews or collection plates. The USCCB, most of the Curia, most of the world’s bishops, and yes, Pope Francis too, are completely out of touch, ignorant, and are leading Catholics to ruin. There’s just no nice way to say this-we are all in for a world of trouble.

    • Yes! I was in northern Italy in July, for a very Catholic function. I was awake due to jet lag very early my first morning and I am certain I heard the sound of the muslim call to prayer as I did my own morning prayers, not long before the Angelus bells. Kyrie eleison.

  4. I seriously hope our bishops stop pandering to the political left (which will find a reason to hate them no matter what they do) and start actually defending the faith.

    • Since in America, almost 100% of the population (and literally every single political party) is on the political left, I wouldn’t hold my breath. By definition, any form of government which draws its authority and legitimacy from popular consent is “liberal.” A political party dedicated to preserving the previous generation’s implementation of liberalism hardly deserves the name “conservative.”

      To quote Ives Dupont: “Modern democracy was not born in the minds of God-fearing men, but in the minds of so-called philosophers who had already abjured their Christian faith, and rejected Christian Philosophy. It follows that many tenets of modern democracy are contrary to Christian doctrine, a thing which the Popes have repeatedly stressed. In all modern democracies, without exceptions, Christian principles are continually flouted, and Christian values superseded by man-made ideas.”

      Has there ever been a more diabolically effective turn of phrase for prying a people from their duties to God and their rulers than “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”?

      • Well written, Josh. I would strongly recommend Chris Ferrera’s “Liberty, the god that failed.” That one book opened my eyes more than any other book. However, be prepared to view the US differently after reading.

The Lutherans joined that gravy train as well. Lutheran Social services/LSS in Minnesota alone is reaping millions for the refugees. The mind boggles at the figures for LSS which is fairly close to the aforesaid numbers for the USCCB fund. Note the hugh salary this woman receives for bringing us trouble. Is this what Christ wants me to go along with? I think NOT. There is no way on earth that anyone can equate Christianity with Islime….nor is their Allah the flip side of our Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For if it were true, one must conclude a hugh scam has been accorded to females by this sadistic, cruel, misogynist creature, Allah Uckbar.

    Ann Corcoran has a fabulous website on the Refugee Resettlement program. I wrote her a few years ago to express my thanks for what she was exposing. We exchanged a few emails and I learned she does not get paid for her site and is probably the only one in the US keeping tabs on who is coming in where, and how it is impacting towns and states. From welfare costs, to joblessness (90% of refugees live on the dole), to the need to build more and more prisons for moe men acting like Neanderthals.

    Several months ago Ann spoke in front of Congress about these refugees. I was amazed to see that few of those men had a clue as to what was happening on their own soil. And I doubt that many of them knew that our major churches were involved in getting OUR tax dollars to resettle these people. A Michigan doctor last year bilked Medicare for 190 mill…you see his/doc’s photo and think he looks decent until you realize he is just doing what his so called religion preaches…to steal from infidels.     When, last summer, thousands of refugees from the Middle East – most of them men, but described by the media as “families” – were enthusiastically “welcomed” here in Germany, many of us believed that it was only a matter of time before this sort of incident would occur.

    Now, though, we are convinced this is only the beginning.

    Yet German politicians keep repeating the mantra that there is “no connection, no connection” between the influx of refugees and incidents like the ones in Cologne, Stuttgart, and Hamburg.

    It’s trite, I know, but I can’t help reflecting on the idea that “there are none so blind as those who will not see.”

    • Does it occur to you that they see, but they don’t care? You need to break a few eggs to make an omelet, and they believe the multicultural utopia they will eventually be able to create will all be worth it.

There are not a few authentic catholic prophecies (“Trial, Tribulation, Triumph… “by Desmond Birch) that treat of civil wars in Italy, Germany, France, England having to do with Mahometans and so we now are alive in an epoch where it is official church praxis to ignore the past when it comes to Mahometans (Nostra Aetate), to ignore the present Mahometan violence against Christians, and to ignore the prophecies concerning the Mahometans.

    When one has their denial ducks all in a row and they are marching through the Church causing a riot of peace quacking and befouling the place with their deluded droppings, one is well-advised to get a gun for the Church specifically, and the west in general, have abandoned you.

  9. Well, 1962-1965, BCE, The Bestest Council Ever, taught that the Mahometans worship the same God we do. And then it counsels us to forget the past. No, seriously. That is the way it reads. Forget the past…

    And that footnote. THAT is a source for a radical Doctrinal declaration. Really? A line lifted out of a letter…

    “Cf St. Gregory VII, letter XXI to Anzir (Nacir), King of Mauritania (Pl. 148, col. 450f.)”

    Hmm, I seem to recall recently reading a thing or two about Pope St. Gregory VII. Oh yeah, it was in Dom Gueranger’s, The Liturgical Year. Here is what I read;

    And yet, Gregory was that Father of the Christian world who, from the very commencement of his pontificate, was full of the thought of driving the Mahometans out of Europe, and of delivering the Christians from the yoke of the Saracens. It was the inspiration taken up by his successors, and carried out under the name of the Crusades. In a letter addressed to all the faithful, our Saint thus speaks of the enemy of the Christian name, whom he describes as being at the very gates of Constantinople, committing every kind of outrage and cruelty….(writing to King Henry, the Great Pope continues in this vein)…At this moment fifty thousand men are preparing; and, if they can have me to head the expedition as leader and Pontiff, they are willing to march to battle against the enemies of God, and, with divine assistance, to go even to our Lord’s sepulcher.

    Gosh. That elderly, Pope Saint was unloving and not respectful of the dignity of others. He seems so unlike our ecumenical Popes since the beginning of BCE. He hardly sounds of the character who would think he might have someday been the source of the quite questionable doctrine that the Mahometans worship the same God as we do.

    Who knows? Maybe there was a very good reason we were counseled by BCE to forget the past.

    In any event,y’all know that the Mahometans teach that they worship the same God as we Catholics worship, right?

    And so, wait…hold on, just a second. Nope. Nope. I must have been thinking about some other Faith because the false Faith of Mahomet has the putative Holy Book, the Koran, where Allah tells the Mahometans they do not worship the same God we do, so, maybe we Catholics might wanna rethink that whole we-worship-the-same-God thingy;; that is, Allah teaches that He is a different God than the God Catholics worship.

    Kafiroon 109:1] Proclaim, (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “O disbelievers!”

    [Kafiroon 109:2] Neither do I worship what you worship.

    [Kafiroon 109:3] Nor do you worship Whom I worship.

    O, and here is Aquinas:

    Summa Contra Gentiles, Book 1, Chapter 16

    He (Mohammed) seduced the people by promises of carnal pleasure to which the concupiscence of the flesh urges us. His teaching also contained precepts that were in conformity with his promises, and he gave free rein to carnal pleasure. In all this, as is not unexpected; he was obeyed by carnal men. As for proofs of the truth of his doctrine, he brought forward only such as could be grasped by the natural ability of anyone with a very modest wisdom. Indeed, the truths that he taught he mingled with many fables and with doctrines of the greatest falsity.

    He did not bring forth any signs produced in a supernatural way, which alone fittingly gives witness to divine inspiration; for a visible action that can be only divine reveals an invisibly inspired teacher of truth. On the Contrary, Mohammed said that he was sent in the power of his arms – which are signs not lacking even to robbers and tyrants. What is more, no wise men, men trained in things divine and human, believed in him from the beginning (1). Those who believed in him were brutal men and desert wanderers, utterly ignorant of all divine teaching, through whose numbers Mohammed forced others to become his follower’s by the violence of his arms. On the contrary, he perverts almost all the testimony of the Old and the New Testaments by making them into a fabrication of his own, as can be seen by anyone who examines his law. It is thus clear that those who place faith in his words believe foolishly.

    • That statement is incorrect: Allah is not God the Eternal Father; Allah is Satan. And Islam does not respect Jesus as a prophet. They mention Him as a prophet..then say He will return and break all the crosses – that is not respect. And Islam is NOT an Abrahamic religion even if Muslims say it is. Abraham did not start Islam. and Islam contradicts Abraham’s way of life and service to the One True God, Vatican II was not doctrinal so it does not begin to qualify for infallibility It was a bishops’ coffee clatch….just like the Synod with no doctrinal authority.

    Who is this “We” to which you refer? Merely the collection of human beings who reside within the geographic confines of the political entity known as America? If that’s really the only criteria for “American,” then I suppose it’s a near certainty that there will always be a large, fertile population in America.

    If, however, “We” means those people who _are_ Americans (as opposed to people who live in America), then I’d not be so blithe. “We” can’t preserve our civilization by cuckolding ourselves and treating our aborted children as fungible with Somali Muslim immigrants.

    I’d dig a little deeper into those birthrate figures, and see how they breakdown by race and religion before taking too much comfort from a high “American” birthrate.

    If X is intrinsically evil, it does not follow that it is an evil “of the same level” as Y which is also intrinsically evil. For example, lying is intrinsically evil but it is clear not of the same level as abortion. “Intrinsically evil” only means that it is always wrong and can’t be justified by circumstances. It says little about how wrong it is.

    • The statement that “racism is intrinsically evil” is false. Diabolically false.

      “Racism” is a word (and, for all intents and purposes, a concept) that did not exist prior to the 19th century. This, despite the fact that “races” have been known to exist for many millenia prior. How, then, did Christendom never know of this “sin” until recently?

      The belief that “racism” is intrinsically wrong is fundamentally equivalent to the claim that to love different people to different degrees, based on their relationship to you, is fundamentally wrong.

      By way of thought experiment, consider: A man sees his own five-year-old daughter and a different five-year-old girl whom he doesn’t know in the path of a speeding bus. Only able to save one, he bypasses his own daughter (thinking that to prefer to save her life would, in some manner, be selfish and therefore blameworthy) and saves that of the stranger. Is such a man noble in sacrificing his own interest (in the continued happiness he would enjoy from his daughter’s company), or is he monstrously evil for failing in the duty he has, due to his state in life and relationship with his daughter, to prioritize protecting her over protecting a stranger?

      Did the devil ever come up with a more clever temptation to sin than to cloak the shirking of our duty to kith, kin and tribe with the patina of selflessness?

      If you concede the existence of an elevated duty to a direct family member over a stranger, do you not also concede that you may owe elevated duties to others more remotely connected (e.g., second cousin, fourth cousin, fifteenth cousin, fellow Irishman, fellow European), yet still more closely connected than a complete stranger (e.g., Saudi Arabian or inhabitant of Macronesia)?

      “Racism” is not antagonism towards others who are different, it’s a dysphemism for the concept that you have an _elevated_ duty (or preference) for those situated more closely than a stranger, due to your state in life.

  12. The Catholic bishops are a complete trainwreck on this issue. We have to do something about it. We can’t sit back and wring our hands any more. We have to roll up our sleeves and take action. I’m not sure what form that means, but these bishops need to go. They have to go.

    The average IQ of the American bishops has to be below 100. It’s terrifying to contemplate. Just terrifying.

  13. In another comment I recently made, I referred to the “inedible crassness” on the part of Merkel in inviting Islam to pour into Europe in even greater numbers than they have been doing – and I was roundly abused for making this rather obvious comment.

    Cologne (as well as Hamburg and Stuttgart and no doubt others) will be a turning point.
    There will now be a violent reaction in Europe and elsewhere, because Islam has assaulted us and it will be at its most violent and nasty starting in Germany, but spreading elsewhere. Merkel has contributed significantly to this.

    Islam has the bit between it’s teeth. They they already consider the parts of Europe they have occupied as the Caliphate, whether parts of Paris, North Brussels, various towns in the UK and so on. They will not change there minds or beliefs,

    In my opinion war in Europe is now inevitable. At best it will be a close run thing.

  14. Where is Pope Urban II successor? The Catholic Church has always lead the defense of Europe from the evils of Islam and Islamic Invasion. A policewoman attacked and nothing done. Let that settle in for a moment. If they will not protect the policewoman who will they protect? No one.

    It is past time for the Church to recognize that there is a time and a place for the Church Militant. It is not a dirty word. It saved Spain, France, Austria for centuries parts of the Middle East, Vienna not just once. Think of Lepanto. Where has that spirit gone. That Holy Spirit, that call to battle. Mother Mary was our protector at Lepanto. We need our Pope to call on men of strength and courage to battle this or Europe is lost. We are not just a religion of pacifists. Weak milquetoast who allow their mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters to be raped. Christ said to sell your cloak to buy a sword.

    We need the spirit of our Warrior Saints back. We need the men who won at Lepanto, Malta, and Vienna back.

    • We have learned the wrong lessons from the 20th century. Well, the Princes of the Church have, at any rate. The laity have saved the Church before (prior to Nicaea, in prime example) and may need to once more.
